Black-eyed Susan ‘Goldsturm’ | Plant Profile

Black-eyed Susan ‘Goldsturm’ (Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii) are prairie perennials that are native to the American midwest. The yellow, daisy-like flowers bloom in abundance from June to September. The rigid flower stems rise above the oblong dark green foliage.

‘Goldsturm’ prefers average fertility, dry to medium moisture, well drained soils in full sun.

‘Goldsturm’ are most attractive when massed in a border or naturalized area. The prolific bloom is highly ornamental for mid to late summer. Butterflies and other beneficial insects are attracted to the long lived flowers.

Description

Black-eyed Susan 'Goldsturm' Characteristics

'Goldsturm' are easy to grow perennials that are almost entirely covered by flowers during the summer bloom. While these plants may survive in less that full sun, sun exposure is essential for the best bloom. Some drought and dry soil is tolerable, however this may effect the growth. Good air circulation can help to combat diseases associated with too much moisture. Deadheading spent flowers improves the overall appearance of the plant and encourage additional bloom. Propagation occurs via spreading roots.

Angular leaf spot is a bacterial disease that can threaten the health of 'Goldsturm'. Black spots start small on lower leaves but grow to encompass the whole leaf and moves up the plant. Powdery mildew can also occur.
