Freeman Maple ‘Armstrong’ | Plant Profile

Freeman Maple ‘Armstrong’ (Acer x freemanii) are narrow, tall, deciduous, ornamental trees. They can reach to 70′ tall with only a 15′ spread. The branches appear to almost stand on end as they grow vertically. The bark is a silver color while the leaves can be striking in fall. While the fall color can be ornamentally attractive, most years the leaves are a subdued yellow/orange.

‘Armstrong’ maples prefer acidic, medium to wet soils with good drainage in full sun to part shade. While these trees prefer consistently moist ground, they can have some drought tolerance once established.

Freeman Maple ‘Armstrong’ can be beautiful additions to any size yard or park. The narrow and tall structure makes them perfect for small spaces that need some privacy. They can often be found lining streets or as accent pieces in parks. The narrow form contrasts well with larger, more rounded trees. Their tolerance of wet soils make them perfect for absorbing excess water in low or wet spots.

Description

Freeman Maple 'Armstrong' Characteristics

Freeman Maple 'Armstrong' is a cross breed between Red Maple and Silver Maple. It was specifically selected for the vibrant fall foliage of the Red Maple and silver bark of the Silver Maple. 'Armstrong' combines the attractiveness of the Red Maple with the hardiness of the Silver Maple.

These ornamental trees are particularly hardy to pests and disease. Some young specimens may be susceptible to pests that will munch on the leaves.
