Chokeberry ‘Brilliantissima’ | Plant Profile

Chokeberry ‘Brilliantissima’ are deciduous multi-stemmed shrubs that are native to the woodlands of the American east. Singular plants are vase shaped, but propagate via basal shoots and can easily form large masses. Bunches of white or pink flowers bloom in spring. After the flowers die back, an abundance of small edible red fruits cover the bush. The glossy green foliage become bright red in the fall and creates fabulous autumn and winter interest.

‘Brilliantissima’ prefers medium moisture soils with good drainage in full sun to part shade. These shrubs naturally occur in both wet and dry brush lands so are tolerant of a wide range of soils, including rocky and clay. If fruit production is desired, they are best planted in full sun. Remove basal shoots (reaching root sprouts) to prevent propagation.

‘Brilliantissima’ can be used in a wide variety of landscape applications. They can be left to naturalize on hillsides, flat ground, or along streams or banks. Their multi-season interest also make them suitable for landscaping in yards or near structures.
