Description

Blue Fescue 'Elijah Blue' Characteristics

'Elijah Blue' is a small variety of Blue Fescue, growing only to 8" and displays the ice blue tones that make Blue Fescues famous. The more sun that it is exposed to, the more vibrant the color. Though used as a groundcover in some installations, these plants do not spread much, so planting many close together is an option. Blue Fescue's interesting color make it a popular choice as accents to centerpieces or near walkways. It mixes well with other ornamental grasses and perennials.

Blue Fescue prefers full sunlight and may tolerate some shade but this often results in fewer flowers and a duller color. Dryish, well drained soils are preferable as root rot will likely occur in wet soils. In drought, water weekly to maintain growth. Blue Fescue should be planted with mulch which acts as a fertilizer.

In Pittsburgh, the foliage will likely turn brown in the winter. Unlike more cold tolerant plants, dead foliage should be left through the winter to help protect the roots from freezing. Foliage should then be cut back in early spring to within a few inches of the ground. This will make way for new growth in the coming spring months. Flower heads should be cut away to keep the shape of the plant and to prevent self seeding. If you want to propagate your Blue Fescue, self seeding may occur and bring new growth. Blue Fescue is a short-lived perennial and may die after a few years if not divided and propagated.
