Description
Boxwood 'Green Mountain' Characteristics
'Green Mountain' are low-growing hedges that are tolerant of moderate pruning and shearing. These are slow-growing shrubs and should not be expected to grow above 5 feet tall, especially when sheared. In the cold winters of Pennsylvania, the leaves are likely to turn a yellow-brown if planted or maintained incorrectly.
While 'Green Mountain' are tolerant of pruning and sheering, be sure to avoid cutting until there is no threat of frost as this may kill new growth. Do not landscape at the base of these plants as other growth may interfere with the shallow roots. Heavy snow accumulations can damage and break the thin branches, so snow should be removed as early as possible.
Root rot is common in poorly drained soils. Blights and leaf sport can occur. Damaging insects often make their home in the dense foliage.
When pruned the 'Green Mountain' can be a beautiful accent to a formal garden. It is also popular in parks and other decorative landscaping. The low hedges can be used to divide yards and to line borders. They make beautiful accent pieces to fountains and other decorative pieces.
