Bring the Outdoors Home

Border Forsythia ‘Lynwood Variety’ | Plant Profile

Border Forsythia ‘Linwood Variety’ (Forsythia x intermedia) are deciduous shrubs that were first discovered in Northern Ireland. Large yellow flowers cover the plant in late winter to early spring. These shrubs bring late winter interest when few other plants are blooming. The dark green leaves turn yellow or purple in fall.

‘Linwood Variety’ prefers average fertility, medium moisture, well drained soils in full sun to part shade. The soils should be loosely packed. These shrubs can be tolerant of deer, drought, clay, and poor fertility soils. Pruning is required to maintain a tidy appearance. Pennsylvania winters may be too cold for plentiful flower crops.

‘Linwood Variety’ are perfect for naturalized areas where pruning is not required and they can propagate freely. They can be located on slopes for erosion control or in sunny woodland areas. If well maintained, they make attractive multi-season interest hedges.

Description

Border Forsythia Characteristics

'Linwood Variety' are informal shrubs with vibrant yellow flowers. These shrubs are quick to naturalize and must be pruned if propagation is not desired.  Pruning must be done immediately after the flowers die back. Flower buds for the next year start to grow as early as July, so pruning after this time will result in significant bloom loss. To prune, it is possible to remove old wood and untidy branches each year or cut the entire plant to a few inches above the ground every few years.

Leaf spot, crown gall, and dieback are all possible with 'Linwood Variety'. Occasional insects that may damage these shrubs are spider mites, aphids, and Japanese beetles.
