Glossy Abelia | Plant Profile

Glossy Abelia (Abelia x grandiflor) are fragrant shrubs with extremely long lived blooms. They have a naturally rounded shape with thin arching branches. Groups of fragrant white or pink bell-shaped flowers continuously bloom from May to September. The glossy, dark green leaves become purple in the fall.

Glossy Abelia prefers average fertility, medium moisture, well drained soils in full sun to part shade. These shrubs are not particularly winter hardy and can sustain significant damage in winters that reach below zero. In spring, prune away dead branches to make way for new growth. These plants survive best when provided with winter protection.

These multi-season interest shrubs have a wide variety of garden applications. They can be planted singularly at entryways or massed on hillsides or along fences. When planted on hillsides they can provide effective erosion protection.
