Bring the Outdoors Home

Apple Serviceberry | Plant Profile

Apple Serviceberry ‘Autumn Brilliance’ (Amelanchier x grandiflora) are deciduous, fruit producing, multi-trunked trees. Despite the name, the fruits resemble blueberries and are considered to be of culinary value. The green leaves of summer turn bright oranges and reds in fall, as indicated by the name.

‘Autumn Brilliance’ prefer average fertility, well drained soils with medium moisture in full sun to part shade. These trees propagate by basal shoots which should be removed unless a naturalized effect is desired.

‘Autumn Brilliance’ have a wide variety of applications. They can be aligned to create an informal hedge, displayed singularly as an ornamental piece, or allowed to naturalize in woodland areas. Birds are highly attracted to the edible berries.

Apple Serviceberry ‘Autumn Brilliance’ are ornamentally interesting, fruit bearing trees. They require little maintenance, unless propagation is desired. The berries can be used to make homemade jams, spreads, and pies.

Some non-threatening fungal diseases may occur. Rust, leaf spot, and powder mildew are possible and treatable with anti-fungals. ‘Autumn Brilliance’ is particularly resistant to disease.

Description

Apple Serviceberry 'Autumn Brilliance' Characteristics

Hydrangeas are unique in that the flowers can change color depending on the acidity of the soil. White varieties remain white regardless, but blues become bluer in acidic soils. In more basic soils, flowers can appear soft yellow or pink. Aluminum sulfate make soil more acidic and can make the flowers bluer. Lime can be added to soils to remove acidity and encourage softer pink and yellow colors.

Pruning damaged stems in late winter can encourage new growth in spring. Some varieties are not particularly winter hardy. They should be installed in a sheltered location with plenty of mulch. While unattractive, burlap wraps can help hydrangeas survive harsh winters. If not protected in winter, foliage may die back and blooms may be sparse.

Bud blight, bacterial wilt, leaf spot, and mildew are all possible blights of hydrangeas.
