Rhododendron PJM Group | Plant Profile

Rhododendron PJM Group are a specific group of Rhododendron hybrids. These evergreen shrubs are small to medium sized with a naturally rounded shape and small leaves. Clusters of large flowers may be lavender, rose, or pink. In spring, the flowers cover the plant and are extremely showy. The medium green foliage takes on purple hues for winter. Their extreme winter hardiness make them a popular choice in the Pittsburgh region.

Rhododendron PJM Group prefers acidic, fertile, medium moisture, well drained soils in part shade to full shade. Pruning is not required, except for the clipping of dead flowers to avoid ugly large dead flowers.

Rhododendron PJM Gr can be grouped or planted individually. Align to create a shrub border with large, showy, and fragrant flowers. They perform well in shaded gardens. The fragrant flowers can attract bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects.

Description

Rhododendron PJM Group Characteristics

Rhododendron PJM Group are evergreen shrubs with large pink or lavender flowers. Proper maintenance is required to keep Rhododendrons healthy and blooming. Some shade is necessary as the leaves may scorch in direct afternoon sun. Sun dappled shade or morning sun with afternoon shade is preferred. While soils should be consistently moist, good drainage is essential, especially in heavy clay. The roots are shallow, so landscaping should not be done at the base of these shrubs. Mulch around the base to help retain consistent soil moisture and to protect the roots from harsh winters. Acidify soils as necessary.

Rhododendron PJM Group are susceptible to a multitude of insect or disease blights, though they should rarely be an issue unless improperly cared for. Insecticides and anti-fungals may help. Root rot is common in overly saturated soils. Chlorosis, evident by the yellowing of the leaves, is an indication that the soils has too high of a pH. This should be resolved immediately as chlorosis can be fatal.
